All the Places That Became Home

October 25, 2026

Nantasket Beach, from the Fancy Bathers seriesWilliam S. Kimball & Company · 1889

She left home young,
with a head full of plans,
a heart full of hope,
and no map in her hands.

A little afraid,
a little bit brave,
with dreams of a life
she was ready to make.

So she went.

New streets, new keys,
new cities to learn,
new versions of herself
at every turn.

She learned how to start
with whatever she had,
how to make a home
in a place that felt strange.

How to walk into a room
where nobody knew how to say her name,
and slowly, somehow,
make a life all the same.

When people asked,
she'd smile and say, "I'm fine."
As if building a life from scratch again and again
was a perfectly reasonable use of time.

And then there were nights
when the quiet got loud,
when she missed her family
and wished she could say it out loud.

She missed her family.
God, she missed them sometimes.
The ordinary, unremarkable things
that distance steals one day at a time.

The meals, the noise,
the familiar old ways.
The comfort of being together
without counting the days.

She wished they could know her,
the woman she'd grown to be.
Not just the polished updates,
but the whole messy story.

The things she was proud of.
The things that went wrong.
The moments she wished they were there for,
the days that felt too long.

She wanted to tell them everything.
She wanted them to understand.
But life kept moving,
and distance kept growing.

So she'd say, "I'm good." "Work's fine."
Then hang up and miss them
on the other side of the line.

And still, she kept going.

Through springs of possibility,
summers that flew,
autumns of letting go
of the lives that she once knew.

She loved the beginning,
the promise, the thrill.
The feeling that somewhere
her life was waiting still.

She just hadn't read the fine print:
every beginning costs.
Sometimes you find a whole new world.
Sometimes you count what you've lost.

A street she'd grown fond of.
A friend she'd have to leave.
A version of herself
she wouldn't get back, even if she tried.

But somewhere between the airports,
the goodbyes and the unknown,
she found people who made her feel
a little less alone.

The friend who called
when she'd gone too quiet.
The one who showed up after a heartbreak
and refused to let her sit alone

The ones who brought food,
made jokes, let her cry.
Who stayed on the phone
when she couldn't explain why.

Some had known her for years,
through distance and change.
Some met her in a new city
where everything felt strange.

Some stayed across oceans,
through missed calls and busy lives.
Some pulled up a chair one day
and somehow became part of her life

And there were those beautiful people
who didn't need a reason or plan.
They just made room at their tables
and welcomed her as their own

More people to love.
More hands to hold.
More stories to tell
as the years unfold.

She had friends who knew her beginnings,
friends who met her halfway,
friends who'd seen her through seasons
she could barely explain.

They knew her best stories
and her worst decisions,
her big, brave plans
and her questionable provisions.

They laughed when life went sideways,
when the grand plan came undone.
Because apparently, starting over
was her favourite hobby, second to none.

And she kept moving.
City to city.
Country to country.
Always becoming,
always leaving something behind.

For years, she thought home was a place
she hadn't managed to find.
She didn't see how many homes
she'd gathered in the meantime.

The family she missed
and the friends who came through.
The people who saw her
when she hadn't a clue.

And when she looks back now,
past the years and the miles,
she remembers the people
before she remembers the files

The kitchens, the laughter,
the late-night calls,
the hugs at departures,
the friends through it all.

The places that changed her.
The people who stayed.
The parts of herself
that each chapter remade.

She left home to find a life,
to see what she could do.
She never knew how many hearts
would help her make it through.

Some things, it seems,
take a little more time.

But she'll go with the laughter,
the love, and the scars,
with a family back home
and her people scattered across the stars.

And maybe home was never
one place she had to choose.

Maybe it's the people she carries,
the love she gets to keep,
the roots that stretch across the world
while her restless heart runs deep.

She left home to find herself.
That's how the story starts.

She found a life across the map,
and people who made room in their hearts.
